Kawartha Lakes Minor Lacrosse Association

PEE WEE FURY COACH: 2007 COACH OF THE YEAR

The Kawartha Lakes Minor Lacrosse Association is pleased to announce that Paul Hough, Head Coach of the Peewee Fury Rep Team was named the Ontario Lacrosse Association’s Zone 6 Coach of the Year. The announcement was made following September’s OLA Zone 6 meeting.

Hough’s peewee team won the Peewee D Zone Championship in July and followed that with the Kawartha Lakes Minor Lacrosse Associations’ first Provincial Championship. This success is unprecedented at the provincial level, as the club is only in its fourth year of existence and second year of representative play.

“It was great to see our team take gold at provincials, to be honoured like this, after the fact makes this year all the more special.” Said Hough. “Considering the group of people that was nominated, it really is an honour.” Adding “I think this award is a reflection of the team work mentality that our coaching staff brought to the floor each night.”

The award will be formally presented at the Ontario Lacrosse Association Annual General Meeting in Niagara Falls in November.

FINAL 2007 STATS...

August 10-12, 2007:

MIDGET FURY at PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

August 10-12, four intensely-played games in just 28 hours proved to be a bit too much for the Kawartha Lakes Farmers' Mutual Insurance midget rep lacrosse team at the provincial D championship tournament.

The Fury midget rep team won two games and lost two at the provincial tournament in Kitchener-Waterloo. Kawartha Lakes was eliminated on Saturday night by the Kingston Krossfire, the eventual tournament champions in the 15-team event. Kingston was also the 2007 Eastern Ontario Zone 5 "C" Champions.

In just its first full season of rep play, the midget Fury team showed it could compete with all clubs at the "D" level throughout the province. The club displayed some of its best team play and all-around efforts of the season at the Ontario tournament. The Fury actually led Kingston 2-1 with eight minutes to play in the team’s fourth and final game, but after impressive offensive efforts and strong defensive play in the fast-paced match, the cumulative effects of two games on Friday and as many on Saturday seemed to take their toll on the club. Entering the third period of the Kingston game with the one-goal lead, Kawartha Lakes had outshot the Krossfire 21-20, but managed just three more shots in the final period. Meanwhile, Kingston peppered Fury goaltender Luke Smith with 14 shots in the third period, and scored four of its six third-period goals on power plays. The combination of fatigue and penalties were too much for the Fury to overcome.

Game Results:
Game 1: Orangeville 6, Fury 3
Game 2: Fury 6, Guelph 4
Game 3: Fury 14, London 4
Game 4: Kingston 7, Fury 2

MIDGET FURY LOSES TO WEST DURHAM

The Fury returned to OLA league play Wednesday, July 4th, however, its effort suggested the players were still feeling the effects of Monday's tournament. The local club didn't put up much resistance in a 7-1 loss to the West Durham Rock.

Trailing 7-0, Cody Poulton broke the Rock's shutout with his goal late in the second period. Greg O'Neill was awarded the lone assist.

This may have been a let down from the tournament. The Rock outplayed The Fury most of the game as it was a very lethargic effort by The Fury.

The Fury has some time to lick its wounds as the team's next game isn't until July 17 when it hosts Toronto Beaches at the Lindsay Recreation Complex. Game time is 8 p.m.

UXBRIDGE SPOILS MIDGET FURY SEASON OPENER

Uxbridge edges Fury 4-3 in a close one.

The "Farmers' Mutual Insurance Company" Midget Fury opened the season on the road visiting the Uxbridge Enforcers. It was tough see-saw battle with Uxbridge edging the Fury 4-3. The Fury looked to be squeezing their sticks a little hard and were a little tentative, maybe due to the fact that many were playing their first ever lacrosse game at the rep level. But still, the game could have gone either way. The first period was very even with shots 7-6 in Uxbridge's favour. Uxbridge opened the scoring at the 11:00 mark. The Fury tied the game at 3:11 on a power play goal by Brandon Lodge, assisted by Kevin Beaulieu. The period ended 1-1.

Fury goalie James Puffer held Uxbridge off the board in the second period which saw Uxbridge out-shoot the Fury 6-2 but the score remained 1-1.

The third period saw both teams battling hard. Uxbridge came out strong to start the 3rd period getting a goal 13 seconds in. The Fury tied it up three minutes later at 12:03 on a goal by Wade Coady, assisted by Steven Junkin and Beaulieu. They went ahead 3-2 at 10:41 on a goal by Junkin assisted by Greg O'Neill. Again two minutes later at 8:52 Uxbridge made it 3-3 on the power play and went ahead for good with 6:51 remaining making it 4-3. The Fury never gave up, coming on strong at the end, and with Uxbridge receiving a penalty with 1:08 remaining, and the Fury with their goalie pulled, failed to tie the score. The third period ended with Uxbridge out shooting the Fury 12-6, making it 25-14 for the game.

The next game for the Midget Fury team is Friday, May 25 at 8:00pm at the Lindsay Rec Complex versus the Newmarket Redbirds.

Wednesday, May 16, 2007:

PEE WEE FURY STILL UNDEFEATED

Fury defeated the Uxbridge Enforcers 3-1 and improve their season record to 2-0-1.

On Wednesday night, the "Newton Electric" Pee Wee Fury headed to Uxbridge to face the Enforcers for their third game of this young lacrosse season. In the first period, the game went back and forth, as both teams were very tentative in their play, with the passing and shooting being a bit off the mark. As the period progressed however, you could see the Fury if they played their game, should be able to control their opponent and come away with the victory. With the score knotted at 0-0, Nic Williams picked the loose ball up at mid floor and went in all alone on the Uxbridge goalie and with what can only be described as a major league fake, blew the ball over the goalies shoulder, into the top part of the net, giving the Fury a 1-0 lead.
The Fury continued to control the play and with one minute left to go in the 1st period, were rewarded again for their hard work on a beautiful passing play between Thomas Weber and Nick Hepburn, who set up Zach Gilmore for an easy goal. The first period ended with the Fury up by a score of 2-0, and outshooting their opponents by a margin of 15-4.

The second period again was controlled by the Fury, and at the 12 minute mark, a sparkling individual effort by Riley Smith put the boys up by a score of 3-0. In the middle of this period the team from Uxbridge started to take it to the Fury, as they sat back and stopped playing their game. This resulted in 2 fantastic scoring chances, and although goalie Josh ONeill did not have that many tough shots all night, he was equal to the task and kept the Uxbridge team off the scoreboard with two great saves from close range. The second period ended in favour of the Fury at 3-0, and again they outshot their opponent by a margin of 9-4.

At the start of the 3rd, you could see the only thing the Uxbridge team wanted to do was to spoil Fury goaltender O'Neill's shutout. This was quite evident as they doubled their shot out put from the first couple of periods and fired 8 tough shots at the goalie, and with only 34 seconds to go in the game were rewarded for their efforts, by breaking his shutout. The game ended with a score of 3-1 for the Fury, making their record stand at a 2-0-1.

The next action for the Fury is Thursday, May 24 at the Lindsay Rec Complex. Game time is 7:30pm and the opponent will be the Uxbridge Enforcers.

Friday, May 11, 2007:

PEE WEE FURY EARN TIE IN HOME OPENER

Fury tied the Toronto Beaches 3-3 and improve their season record to 1-0-1.

The Fury were up against a much bigger club in Toronto. The first period started out with the Beaches team taking it right to the Fury and over the course of the first period out shot them by a margin of 9-4, but the score was tied 1-1 at the end of the first. The Fury opened the scoring on a goal by Jasper Poulton. The Fury was able to keep the Toronto Beaches team shooting from the outside of the 24 foot line, and goalie Mac Langford did a great job guarding the goal and keeping them off the score sheet with some great saves. But with just 21 seconds left in the period, the Beaches tied the score at 1-1.

The second period again was controlled by the team from Toronto. They outshot the Fury by a margin of 7-4. But again, the Fury opened the scoring in the 2nd period on a beautiful break a way goal by Craig Shier to put the Fury up by one. Again, goalie Langford handled some very tough shots from the Beaches club, and again they were able to knot the score at 2-2.

The third period however belonged to the Fury. They totally dominated the Beaches and outshot them by a count of 13-2. If not for the Beaches goalie, this game would have gotten out of hand in favour of the Fury. The teams again traded goals in the 3rd and the game ended in a 3-3 tie. Scoring the last goal of the game was Liam Newton, assisted by Jasper Poulton.

For this being the first full year of rep lacrosse, the team has responded very well, and all the boys worked very hard and the team had an excellent game.

PEE WEE FURY REP WINS SEASON OPENER

FURY RUINS PETERBOROUGH HOME OPENER

Fury defeated Peterborough by a 7-5 score due largely to the excellent goaltending of Josh O'Neil. Peterborough out-shot the Fury 37-29. O'Neil stopped 32 of 37 shots. Fury was led in scoring by Matt Northmore with 3 goals, with singles going to Zach Gilmore, Craig Shier, Liam Newton, and Tom Weber, who also had the lone assist.
