Midget Fury Competes Well At The Provincials

The Kawartha Lakes Midget field lacrosse team, sponsored by Crittenden Trucking, participated in the 2010 Ontario Minor Field Lacrosse League's Provincial Championships, held in Brampton, from May 21-24, 2010. Even though the association has only been offering field lacrosse for the past two years, the boys from the U17 team, coached by Steve Millard and Mike Langford, qualified the previous week, for the first time in the history of the association.

The first game for the Fury was against the Oakville 2 team, and the boys came out flying, and at some points of the game dominated, but they had a hard time finding the net. The game was certainly well played defensively by both teams, and in the end, the Fury scored one more goal then their opponents, and came away with a hard-fought, well deserved, 8-7 victory. It was not hard to tell that this was their first victory at the Provincial level, as the smiles on their faces were very evident. Scoring for the Fury was Brad Gerrow with 4 goals, Devin Jordan with 3, Riley Smith with the single, assists went to Gerrow with 2, Weber with 2, and Jordan and Smith with singles.

The second game, according to Coach Millard, would be their toughest test of the season. They would be matched against the team from the Hamilton, playing out of the Western Division. Well, you should always listen to your Coach! He was not to far wrong, and the Fury came away with a good old fashion thumping, at the hands of the boys from Steeltown, ending up on the lobsided end of a 14-2 score. Doing the scoring for the Fury, was Brad Gerrow with both goals, and the lone assist, was given to Brenden Hlibchuk.

It all boiled down to the third game of the tournament for the Fury. The equation was quite simple.....win and you are in....lose, and chaulk the tournament up to experience. Their opponent for game three, would be the squad from Caledon. Well, the boys came out flat in the first two quarters of the game, and it hurt them. By the time the boys figured out how to be successful against a more experienced squad, they just ran out of time. At the half, the Fury were down by a score of 7-1, but in the second half actually outscored Caledon, by a score of 5-3, mounting a late 4th quarter rally, which fell just short. The final score of the contest was Caledon 10 and the Fury 6. Scoring for the Fury was, Devin Jordan with 3, Josh O'Neill, Jacob Halsall, and Brad Gerrow all with singles. Assists went to Smith, Weber and Gerrow, each with singles.

Now that the field season has come to a close, the Fury can look back with pride on the year, and realize they accomplished a very big feat, by qualifying for the Provincials, and can look forward to hopefully building on this year's success, next season.

A special thank you to Head Coach Steve Millard, Assistant Coach Mike Langford, Trainer Paul Jordan, Manager Maxine Jordan, and Danny and Marie Crittenden, of Crittenden Trucking, the team sponsor.
