Two losses for Farmers Mutual midget lacrosse rep team

It was a rough week for the Kawartha Lakes Farmers Mutual Insurance Fury midget rep lacrosse team. Coming off a strong tournament performance in Stayner on June 10, the Fury midget squad was handed two sound defeats on their home court last week.

The Fury was defeated 9-2 by the West Durham Rock on Friday (June 15) in a Zone 6 matchup. The loss was the midget rep team’s seventh in 10 games thus far in the 2007 season.

Two nights previous, the Fury lost 9-1 to the Clarington Gaels.

Despite a few sustained portions of play on Friday where the Fury were able to keep up with the Rock in terms of offensive play, the team’s inability to corral loose balls, especially in its defensive end, proved extremely costly. The Rock led 1-0 until the final three minutes of the first period, when a three-goal outburst before the end of the period put the Fury in a deep deficit.

Greg O’Neill got the Fury on the scoreboard very early in the second period, but the Rock again responded strongly to extinguish any Kawartha Lakes’ hopes of a comeback. West Durham held an 8-1 lead after two periods.

Wade Coady scored the Fury’s second goal of the game on a power play in the third before West Durham got the final goal for the 9-2 score.

Total shots on goal were 34-18 for the Rock.

In the previous game on June 13, the Fury allowed too many Clarington attackers to have uncontested shots, and the home team was unable to mount much of an offensive effort at all. Clarington led 4-0 after the first period and 6-0 after the second. Stewart Harford scored the Fury’s only goal of the game early in the third with a nice shot through legs of the Clarington goaltender. The Gaels netted three more in a four-minute span to keep firm control of the game.

Clarington outshot Kawartha Lakes 29-12.
