NEWMARKET ATTACKS MIDGET FURY
The home floor advantage was not present at the Lindsay Rec Complex for the Farmers’ Mutual Fury Midget lacrosse team. The Newmarket Redbirds, a team the Fury beat at the onset of the season, took flight and dominated the play during an exhibition game Monday night.
The scoring opened with the Fury’s pass attempt from behind their net ricocheting off a Newmarket stick and crossing the Fury line. Less than a minute later, the Redbirds sent another soaring past the Fury goalie to up the score 2-0. Kawartha Lakes were on constant chase, with Newmarket showing aggressive style and precision passing. Defensively drained, by the end of the first period, the Fury was down 6-0.
It wasn’t until the third period, when Josh Gilmore and Tyler Smith assisted on Cody Poulton’s shot between the legs of the Redbirds goalie to put the Fury on the scoreboard. With four minutes left in the game, Mark Smith made a long pass to Tyler Smith, sending him on a breakaway. Although Newmarket was close on Tyler’s heels, he slipped the ball past the left foot of the Redbirds goalie, giving Kawartha Lakes their second goal of the game. Newmarket didn’t let up and in the end, Kawartha Lakes were left drowning in their wake 11-2.
It was a game that left the Fury scrambling and frustrated. A game the Fury would like to forget. A game their fans hope they learn from.
