TOUGH NIGHT FOR THE MIDGET FURY IN NEWMARKET

Monday, July 23, the Farmers' Mutual Midget Fury traveled to Newmarket for a game against the Redbirds.  This opponent is a team that stacks up evenly to the Fury, on any other night that is.  The home team came to play; the visitors did not.  For the most part, the Fury was flat-footed, lacked any spark or energy.  The Fury came onto the floor flat for the opening draw.  Newmarket had a 4-0 lead before the Fury would even register a shot-on-goal, 12 minutes into the game.  It would be the first of only 2 shots in the period with Newmarket owning the ball, the possession, and the energy finishing the period with 10 shots to 2 and a 4-0 score.

The second period the Fury tried to open things up to generate some offense.  It worked somewhat by creating a few breakaways and good chances but it also left the defensive end vulnerable.  Newmarket took advantage and counter-attacked out-shooting the Fury 16-7 and scoring 5 times to the Fury's 1.  The one, a goal by Alex Brodhagen and assisted by Mark Smith and Josh Gilmore came with only 10 seconds left in the period making the score 9-1.

In the third period the Fury came out with a noticeable improved attitude and energy and carried the play for the first 5 minutes.  But that renewed energy did not last long as Newmarket returned to dominating the play and started eating up the clock.  They also out shot the Fury 6-2 in the period and score two early goals to go up 11-1.  Jay Nugent fired a bullet from outside the 24 foot circle to net the Fury's second and final goal of the night, assists went to Corey Fargo and Riley Coulson.

The total shots-on-goal were 32-11 for Newmarket and the final score was 11-2.

The Fury gets s second chance against Newmarket in their next game, Monday July 30 in Lindsay.  They will need to find a way to  improve because it will be their last game before they travel to Pickering on Wednesday, August 1st to compete in the Zone 6 D Championship game against their rival, the Uxbridge Enforcers.  And then the following week it is on to Kitchener for the end of season Provincial Championships.
