The only thing that stood in between the Kawartha Lakes Farmers Mutual Fury and a consolation championship was the outstanding play of a diminutive goaltender.

Despite outshooting its opponent 30-15 in the final, the Fury came out on the wrong end of a 3-2 decision to Orangeville at Monday's Ontario Lacrosse Association (OLA) midget rep tournament in Midland. "Their goalie was outstanding," Fury manager Chris Coulson told The Lindsay Post. "He was about 4'6" tall and about 4'6" wide."

Coulson added the loss was disappointing because it was the team's best played game of the tournament.

Jay Nugent and Alex Broadhagen scored for Kawartha Lakes in the final.
Steven Junkin and Stewart Harford drew the assists.

The Fury earned a spot in the consolation championship by finishing third in the round robin portion of the eight-team tournament. Teams were awarded three points for each win and one point for every period they won.

Kawartha Lakes opened the one-day competition with a 7-2 pasting of the host Midland squad. Junkin led the way with two goals while Kevin Beaulieu had a goal and three assists. Broadhagen, Harford, Corey Fargo and Josh Gilmore added singles in the winning effort. Nugent, with two, Cody Poulton and Mark Smith earned one assist each.

The Fury followed up its victory with a 5-3 loss to Mimico. Beaulieu, Nugent and Harford scored for Kawartha Lakes while Junkin and Smith drew assists.

Despite the hard-luck loss in the final, the coaching staff was happy with the club's performance.

"Overall, they played very well," Coulson said.
