Midget Fury Team Plays Well in Stayner Tournament

Following a slow start to the 2007 season, the Kawartha Lakes Farmers Mutual midget rep lacrosse team has now won two of its past four games.

The Kawartha Lakes Fury advanced to the consolation championship of the Stayner Fair Play Tournament on June 10, and played two very exciting and competitive games at the event.

Kawartha Lakes lost a closely-contested 7-6 game against the Uxbridge Enforcers in the consolation championship in Stayner. The Enforcers are Zone 6 rivals of the Fury and Kawartha Lakes played one of its best games of the season against Uxbridge. The Fury jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the first period of the final with goals from captain Steve Junkin, Josh Nokes and Corey Fargo. Uxbridge got two of those back before the end of the first, then scored three times in the second period to hold a 5-3 lead going into the third. The Enforcers made it 6-3 in the final period before the Fury began an exciting comeback. Cody Welton converted a feed into the middle to make it 6-4 with nine minutes to play, then Stewart Harford capped a great deal of Fury hard work with a power play goal with four minutes remaining to draw Kawartha Lakes within one. After Uxbridge caught the Fury up the floor to score on a long shot for a 7-5 lead with two minutes to play, Harford’s second of the game less than a minute later again made it a one-goal match. The Fury lost several seconds of potential chances due to a scoreboard malfunction, and were unable to score despite a great deal of offensive pressure in the last minute. The Fury were outshot 28-21 by Uxbridge, but outshot the Enforcers 10-8 in the final period.

The Fury were soundly thrashed by the Fergus Thistles in the team’s first game of the tournament. Fergus eventually won the day’s championship with three victories.

Kawartha Lakes’ second game was against Oakville and the Fury rebounded well from the Fergus loss. Tighter defensive efforts by the team and Jay Nugent’s first of two goals in the game gave the Fury a 1-0 lead after the first period. Oakville tied the game early in the second, but Stewart Harford scored for the Fury just 30 seconds later to get the lead that Kawartha would not give up again. Nugent scored again midway through the second for a 3-1 lead, and Fury captain Steve Junkin worked hard for a goal late in the second to make it 4-1. Oakville drew within two goals before the end of the period. Junkin got the eventual winning goal early in the third, then Oakville managed to draw within one goal again with two minutes remaining. The Fury defense and winning goaltender James Puffer remained strong despite the opposition’s efforts to tie as the time ran out, however. Junkin was selected as Fury player of the game. Kawartha Lakes outshot Oakville 27-25.
