PETERBOROUGH LAKERS BURY FURY MIDGETS

With 3 games left to go in their Zone 6 season, all against tough opponents, and with the Provincial Championships coming up in the middle of August, the Mason Home Bantam Fury have to go back to the drawing board again.

The Fury hosted their highway 7 rivals, the Peterborough Lakers on Tuesday night at the Rec Complex in Lindsay, and were demolished by a score of 12-4. Granted the boys had not been on the floor for almost a week, but after playing very well in the Clarington Tournament, and winning 2 of 3 games against some tough opposition, and a practice squeezed in last week, the Fury came out flat, and looked very disinterested in playing this game. Except for some spurts of energy, this game was a dud from the start, and now the coaches have to try to get them ready for a tough schedule next week, when on Tuesday night they host a very tough Toronto Beaches squad, who beat them 8-0 a few weeks ago, and a very talented Markham Thunder team, who they have yet to beat on three occasions this season.

The game on Tuesday started out great, as the Fury won the opening face off, went the length of the floor, and just 8 seconds into the game Brenden Hlibchuk buried a shot into the net behind the Peterborough goaltender. But, it did not take long for the Lakers to take it to the Fury, and at they scored 4 straight goals before the end of the period to take a 4-1 lead. At the end of the period you could see the frustration in Coach Hough's face as he tried to rally the troops and get them back in the game.

But, as the second period began, you could sense that no one really heeded the advice given, and the Fury just did not come to play this night. Just over 2 minutes into the 2nd period the Lakers had again scored 2 more quick goals and now had a commanding 6-1 lead. The Fury did manage to get one goal back at the 10 minute mark when Craig Shier scored, with the lone assist going to Riley Smith. Thinking that this goal may spark the Fury, would have been wishful thinking. The Lakers went onto score 5 straight goals after Shier's tally, and at the end of the 2nd period, the score stood at 11-2 in favour of the Lakers.

Again, the coaching staff was trying to figure out what to say to the boys, as it looked as though their minds were elsewhere, and lacrosse was not the thing on the agenda of many of them. In the 3rd period, the Lakers basically played keep away, and limited their shots, knowing that they had the game well in control. They moved the ball around with ease on the Fury and were content to run the clock down and head back home with the easy victory. The Fury managed to score a couple more goals before the end of the period. Both goals were scored by Craig Shier, with single assists going to Brad Gerrow, Jacob Halsall, and Luke Tamlin. The final score was 12-4, in favour of the Lakers.

Next action for the Mason Homes Bantam Fury, is Tuesday, August 5th, when they will host the Toronto Beaches at the Rec Complex. Game time is 8:00pm.
