MIDGET ZONE PENNANT SLIPS BY

Nerves, excitement, and adrenaline filled the Don Beers arena Wednesday night in Pickering for the Zone 6 Midget “D” Championship lacrosse game. Farmers’ Mutual Fury took on the Uxbridge Enforcers in a fast paced, well-played game. The boys came to play and this was the game they wanted to win.

Six minutes into the first period, Uxbridge set their player on a breakaway, only to be robbed by Luke Smith, the Fury goaltender. Trailing by two, Cory Fargo took a pass from Mark Smith and bounced a low ball past the feet of the Uxbridge goalie to open the scoring for Kawartha Lakes. The Fury held strong defensively, maintaining a close eye on the Enforcer players. The first period ended with Kawartha Lakes trailing 3-1.

Uxbridge were quick to press the Fury end, at the start of the second period, bringing another goal to the Enforcer side. The Fury were determined. They were not giving up. Five minutes into the period, Cody Welton twisted around Enforcer players like a pinball machine and dropped the ball into the net, bringing the score within two. Shortly after a further Enforcer goal, Wade Coady assisted Mark Smith to increase the Fury score once again. Alex Brodhagen took full advantage of an Uxbridge penalty when he sailed the pass from Welton over the Uxbridge goalie’s shoulder and into the top corner. Kawartha Lakes were now in their game. Cheers and whistles rose from the Fury spectators. Nearing the end of the second period, straight off the draw, Cory Fargo jumped on a break away and nothing was going to break his focus. With an Enforcer closing in on his heels, Fargo nailed his second goal of the game. The buzzer rang with the scoreboard reading 5-5. The game and pennant were within reach.

The final period was tough for Kawartha Lakes. Obtaining three penalties, they gave Uxbridge the opportunities they desperately needed. A couple of quick goals and another on an empty Fury net, put the Enforcers back in the lead to win the Zone “D” Championship 8-5. Facing 33 shots on goal and sending 18 to Uxbridge, the Farmers’ Mutual Midget Fury played their best game of the season.

Now their focus is on Provincials, being held in Kitchener August 10-12.
