Kawartha Lakes Farmers Mutual Insurance Fury Midgets Lose Two

July 17 – Toronto Beaches vs. Kawartha Lakes Fury, Lindsay Rec Complex

The final score was 5-1 for Toronto, but the Fury played the larger Toronto team very evenly for the first two periods, and trailed only 2-1 after two periods. This was due mainly to the strong play in net of Fury goaltender James Puffer, who faced 25 shots from the Beaches in the first two periods.

The first 15 minutes was scoreless, though Toronto outshot Farmers Mutual 11-3. After a Toronto powerplay goal opened the scoring early in the second period, Alex Brodhagen tied it for the Fury with a nice low shot through a crowd of Beaches players. Toronto went up 2-1 midway through the period and despite some excellent hustle and good defensive play, the Fury were unable to mount much of an offensive effort. The Fury had just eight shots in the first two periods.

Toronto opened things up in the third as the game itself broke down with a barrage of minor and major penalties.
Final shots on net: 38-15 for Toronto.

July 18 – Fury vs. Uxbridge Enforcers, Uxbridge Recreation Centre

A much better offensive effort by Kawartha Lakes. The Fury played the Enforcers extremely close in the first period and led 1-0 after 15 minutes on a goal by Tyler Smith, assisted by Steve Junkin. Both teams managed seven shots on net.

Kawartha Lakes went up 2-0 early in the second when Cody Poulton made good on a long shot just as an Uxbridge penalty expired. Uxbridge scored on Puffer twice within a minute to tie the game, but Wade Coady converted a nice pass from Corey Fargo to put the Fury ahead again, 3-2 with three minutes to play in the second. Uxbridge got a powerplay goal late in the period to tie the game once again.

The solid effort shown by the Fury in the first two periods disappeared in the third, which was dominated by the home team. Uxbridge scored four times in a seven-minute span, then added an empty-net goal for the final 8-3 score. Final shots on goal were 28-14 in favour of Uxbridge.

The Fury’s next game is Monday (July 23) in Newmarket. The next home game is July 30 against Newmarket, at the Lindsay Recreation Complex at 9 p.m.

The Fury will be competing in the provincial D midget championship tournament Aug. 10 – 12 in Kitchener.
