NO WIN YET FOR BANTAM FURY - BUT READY TO TURN THE CORNER?
The Mason Home Bantam Rep Fury lacrosse team is still looking for their
first win five games into the new season. The jump from the D level to
the C level seems to have the boys spinning their wheels a bit. Last nights
game however was closer then the previous four, so maybe this might be
a sign of things to come, and the boys can hopefully turn the corner and
grab a few victories.
Last nights game in Bowmanville against Clarington got off to a great start
as compared to previous games, with the Fury scoring the first goal just
10 seconds into the game, something they had yet to do in the previous
four. Forward Craig Shier took the opening face off, marched down the floor
on a breakaway and put the shot into the bottom corner of the net on a
startled Gael goaltender. The first period ended in a 1-1 draw, and both
teams looked like they were waiting for the other team to make a mistake.
The second period was much of the same, with a lot of bad passing and mistakes by both teams, with neither team wanting to take the ball and run with it so to speak. Clarington got the go ahead goal 4 minutes into the second, but the Fury got that one back just 2 minutes later on a goal by Zach Gilmore, with the assist going to Craig Shier. But, the see saw battle continued as just 2 minutes after the Fury had knotted things at 2, the Gaels scored again to take back the lead 3-2. Then, with just 3 minutes to go in the 2nd period, Craig Shier potted his second goal of the game and the period ended in a 3-3 tie.
The third period pretty much mirrored the first two periods as the teams
went back and forth, with no one able to deliver the final blow to the
other, until with just over 3 minutes to play, Nic Williams scored for
the Fury, assisted by Sam McGriskin, to give the Fury a 4-3 lead. But as
happened in the past games, the Fury had a defensive lapse, that cost them
the game. The Gaels were able to score 3 goals in a span of 1 minute, to
take the lead 6-4, with just over a 1 minute to go in the game. The Fury
however, tried to mount a comeback, scoring with just 40 seconds to go
in the game, on a goal by Luke Tamlin. A time out was called by coach Paul
Hough, and the Fury won the draw and goalie Josh O'Neill was pulled in
favour of an extra attacker, but the Fury charge fell short.
The boys worked hard, and the coaching staff remains confident that the elusive first win is just around the corner.
The Fury are off now until June 14th, when they will be participating in
the Stayner Hitmen tournament. The next game for the Fury at home is on
Tuesday June 17, 2008 when the Clarington Gaels pay a return visit to the
Lindsay Rec Complex.
